Planning a First Look, or opting for a surprise at the aisle?

Thinking about seeing each other before the official ceremony? There’s lots of positives, but also a few things to consider when planning a First Look on your wedding day.

Creating an intimate moment

A First Look gives you a private, emotional moment together – just the two of you.

It’s a chance to simply connect before the whirlwind begins.

Ease the nerves

Many of my couples feel that a First Look helped calm their nerves before walking down the aisle.

It’s especially great for more introverted couples who want to express emotion without a crowd.

Make private vows

Increasingly, my couples have opted to make private vows during the First Look, or even during the portrait shoot. Saying your vows privately creates a deeply personal, pressure-free moment where you can express your feelings openly and honestly without an audience.

But will it ruin the aisle entry?

It’s a common worry – but no, in our experience it doesn’t diminish the impact of walking down the aisle. The ceremony still feels powerful, emotional and different – with the music, your loved ones present and the moment of commitment.

Timing & light considerations

A First Look happens earlier in the day than the ceremony meaning brighter, harsher light, depending on location. You’ll need to consult with your venue and chat to me, about integrating this into your day, including implications for the timeline and possible locations.

Location, location

Many venues have stunning, private areas ideal for a First Look. Others may require a little more creativity! We’ll help you find a peaceful, private space with the best lighting for great images. A shaded or indoor area may offer soft, flattering light.

Final thoughts

A First Look can ultimately be one of the most meaningful parts of your day. It’s personal, emotional, and totally optional. Remember, the best choice is the one that feels right for you.
